A record-breaking 18 filmmakers signed up for this round of Just Fucking Shoot. A packed house of film fans, friends and family enjoyed shorts from a great variety of genres and skill levels. I screen my short, “Other Steve,” about a Steve who gets a disturbing visit from his future self. Since my baby is due in about a month, this may be the last round for a while.
T’was a super fun day today shooting for DraftKings. And to add frosting to the cake, I had the pleasure of working with Craig Gillespie, award-winning commercial director and director of one of my favorite movies, Lars and the Real Girl. And the DP was none other than Masanobu Takayanagi, DP of Silver Linings Playbook, Black Mass, and Out of the Furnace. Needless to say, I can’t wait to see this spot!
I had the pleasure of taking the Drama Intensive at Warner Loughlin Studios last Sunday. I’d been looking forward to it for over a month and it was worth the wait. The Emotion with Detail technique is super compelling and I can’t wait to dive into 4-week Immersion.
Last Tuesday I shot a commercial for Fox Sports that should start airing in the next few weeks. Look for the guy so consumed by the Fox Sports app that he’s forgotten his lunch is in the microwave. And for any of you golf fans out there, Holly Sonders stars in the spot.
Just Fucking Shoot had its 10th round screening last Saturday and it was a stellar fucking round. 15 filmmaker, lots of funny and heartfelt movies. We gave away 6 trophies! 3 folks shot their 5th film (The Badass Filmmaker award) and 3 shot their 10th film (The No Bullshit Award). I’m incredibly humbled to have led this group for the past 2 years. It’s been a constant source of inspiration. I never thought 2 years ago that I’d make 10 short films in 2 years. I’ll post my short in a few days. Hope you enjoy it.
For my next short, I wanted to write something more personal. In everything I’ve done, there’s been a slight disconnect from reality–either the characters are bizarre or the world is slightly unrealistic. This time around I wanted to dramatize a very personal situation. What I wrote about was how hard it is for people in their 30’s to get pregnant. My wife and I are currently trying and if I’d only known how hard it would be, I would’ve just had a kid in my 20’s. The short is called Next Cycle and it’ll be released online in a couple weeks.
Working on Georgie & Rachel was probably the most fun I’ve had on set. I couldn’t have asked for a better cast or director to work with. Lucia Brizzi, who plays Rachel, was amazing–beyond talented, generous, hilarious, grounding. An absolute gem of a human, and I’m honored to have gotten to work with her. Kelly Vrooman, who plays Annie, was like a great cup of coffee–you just feel more creative and like life is better when she’s around. So fun to play in scenes with her. Our incredible director, Mia Niebruegge, was so supportive, creative, and always knew the right thing to say. I sincerely hope to work with her again.
